Bristol began to be a town around the Gloucestershire facet on the Avon, but since it grew it extended through the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be different with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it ought to be a county by itself".[50]R
